The arrival of the Holy Spirit is a familiar, dramatic event. A group of disciples were gathered together, and suddenly were engulfed with a loud sound and divided tongues that looked like fire. But what happened next was even stranger. All of a sudden, these disciples were able to teach others about God’s deeds of power – by speaking in languages they had never studied or practiced! The crowd heard them speaking and gathered, confused and skeptical. And then Peter stepped up and gave the first Christian sermon, starting with ancient words from the prophet Joel.
It’s a memorable event, but what does it have to do with our life and mission as a congregation following Jesus in the 21st century? Everything! The Holy Spirit was, and is, for everyone – people of all ages, genders, ethnicities, and socioeconomic levels. Join us Sunday as we explore this surprisingly inclusive story of the founding of the church. See you Sunday, in person or online. You are encouraged to wear red on Sunday in celebration of Pentecost.
